چکیده

Soil moisture plays a key role in global water cycles. In the study, soil moisture retrievals from airborne microwave radiometer observations using a single-frequency algorithm were presented. The algorithm is based on a simplified radiative transfer (tauomega) model and the influence of both the roughness and vegetation is combined into a single parameter in the algorithm. The microwave polarization difference index (MPDI) is used to eliminate the effects of temperature. Then soil moisture is obtained through a nonlinear iterative procedure by making the absolute value of the differences between the simulated and observed MPDI minimum. The algorithm was validated with aircraft passive microwave data from the Polarimetric Scanning Radiometer (PSR) at the Arizona during the Soil Moisture Experiment 2004 (SMEX04). The results show that the soil moisture retrieved by the algorithm is in good agreement with ground measurements with a small bias and an overall accuracy of 0.037m 3 m -3 .

Spatial sampling uncertainty in SMEX04 soil moisture fields: A data-based resampling experiment

A data-based resampling experiment is performed to estimate sampling errors of area-averaged soil moisture estimates due to spatial sampling by ground-based sensors. The data consists of high-resolution soil moisture images derived from the Polarimetric Scanning Radiometer (PSR/CX) sensor flown on an aircraft as part of the summer field experiment (SMEX04 — Soil Moisture Experiment 2004) in the...

Modeling and assimilation of root zone soil moisture using remote sensing observations in Walnut Gulch Watershed during SMEX04

Soil moisture status in the root zone is an important component of the water cycle at all spatial scales (e.g., point, field, catchment, watershed, and region). In this study, the spatio-temporal evolution of root zone soil moisture of the Walnut Gulch Experimental Watershed (WGEW) in Arizona was investigated during the Soil Moisture Experiment 2004 (SMEX04). Root zone soil moisture was estimat...

Using vegetation indices for soil-moisture retrievals from passive microwave radiometry

Surface soil moisture and the nature of the overlying vegetation both influence microwave emission from land surfaces significantly. One widely discussed but underused method for allowing for the effect of vegetation on soil-moisture retrievals from microwave observations is to use remotely sensed vegetation indices. This paper explores the potential for using the Normalised Difference Vegetati...

Analysis of a Least-Squares Soil Moisture Retrieval Algorithm from L-band Passive Observations

The Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS) mission of the European Space Agency (ESA), launched on November 2009, is an unprecedented initiative to globally monitor surface soil moisture using a novel 2-D L-band interferometric radiometer concept. Airborne campaigns and ground-based field experiments have proven that radiometers operating at L-band are highly sensitive to soil moisture, due to...

Large-Scale Microwave Remote Sensing of Retrieving Surface Multi-parameters Using Active and Passive Satellite Data: In the Tibetan Plateau Region of Maqu

To conduct with these land surface parameters inversion using microwave observations in the bare soil surface, it is needed to estimate soil moisture (SM), surface temperature (ST) and surface roughness changes with microwave observations. High-frequency passive microwave radiometer sensitivity of the roughness is very low, traditional ground truth can’t provide an accurate large-scale roughnes...
